Beyond the City: The Case for Boquete and the Highlands

Green highland valley and mountains near Boquete, Panama

Panama is known for its skyline and its beaches, but a growing number of buyers are looking up — to the highlands of Chiriquí. Boquete and the surrounding valleys offer cooler temperatures, green mountain views and a settled international community.

What draws buyers to the highlands

  • Mild, spring-like temperatures through much of the year
  • Coffee farms, hiking trails and rivers on the doorstep
  • An established community of residents, clinics and restaurants
  • A slower pace, within reach of David and its airport

Land, title and access

Many highland properties are sold as land or farm lots, and the type of title can vary. Before you commit, ask your attorney to confirm the legal status of the land, water rights and road access. Visit in the rainy season as well as the dry one, so you know how the property behaves all year.

Building and maintenance

Mountain homes need good drainage, solid materials and a builder you trust. Ask to see completed projects, and speak with owners about how their homes have performed through the seasons.

The highlands reward buyers who take the time to know them: visit more than once, and talk to the neighbours.

Tell your advisor how you plan to use the home — full-time, seasonal or as a retreat — so the search can focus on the right valley.
